Description

Probably the first of many. Not very accurate, but I just wanted to practice values and what not. Reference image can be found here: www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing…
The lightest value wasn't nearly as light as I made it look in the picture. Oh wells.

I love the work you've done on the face and form here. The angle of the head is nicely set. 

As for values, it's a little hard to judge (as you've said yourself) because I think the image quality has leached out some of the subtlety. You've got some good dark texture going on in the clothing hatching. With the face, it helps to follow the contours of the skull beneath the skin, to give the face form. 

These (below) are a couple of nice tutorials/examples of value work. The trick is to forget the lines are there at all. I remember the first image I ever did purely with shade - it was a still life with violin - and it turned out too dark, but it taught me to look at the negative space when shading.
